About
Live In Peace Programs offers mentoring, counseling, tutoring, coaching, and advocating for youth and young adults. The program includes a high school academic re-engagement program called SWAG (Students Who Achieve Greatness), a Gap-Year cohort model for exploring post–high school options, and a college scholarship and support program called the College Initiative. Participants also take part in project-based learning in the Live in Peace Bike Shop and can join the Live In Peace Junior Golf Program, which includes golf lessons, mentorship, and academic tutoring.
Live In Peace Programs states that its mission is to empower youth and young adults to reclaim the vision for their future. The organization describes a highly relational model that connects young people to their talents, educational pathways, jobs, and future plans, with wrap-around support at different stages of young adults’ lives. Its model is based on hiring local community leaders who function as extended family members, and homes and program spaces serve as second homes and sometimes primary residences for students in transition. The core methodology comes from the Alive & Free model in San Francisco (also known as Street Soldiers), which is described as a personal development model rooted in nonviolence and healing. All programs are described as venues for students to discover, develop, and direct their creative genius for the benefit of their community and the broader world. The College Initiative reports a graduation rate six times higher than the national average for students in their demographic. The Live In Peace Junior Golf Program provides access to the sport of golf through lessons, mentorship, and academic tutoring while teaching and instilling stated life skills and values.
Live In Peace Programs describes itself as a team of East Palo Alto community leaders with over 150 years of collective youth development expertise. Its programs focus on youth and young adults that are not served by other programs and partners and those identified by their high schools as the most at-risk for dropping out. The high school academic re-engagement program is the result of a partnership between Live In Peace, the County of San Mateo, and Sequoia Union High School District. The organization states that it operates in the same spirit of the village that birthed East Palo Alto. The Executive Director is Heather Starnes-Logwood.
